Outsized cupcakes from your past? Actually a nod to the future: these muffins show off what can be done with alternative vehicles. Find more fantastic contraptions at the 5th annual Maker Faire in San Mateo this May 22 and 23.

Maker Faire celebrations have rapidly grown into a San Francisco Bay Area tradition, attended by tens of thousands. The annual festival includes spectacular creations—such as the Electric Mobile Muffins created by Greg Solber of Kinetic Pastry Science—as well as rows of booths showing off the results of a year of technological tinkering by do-it-yourself masters.

Leveraging the success of the Bay Area event, Make Magazine, the producer of Maker Faire, has planned similar events this year in New York City (September 25 and 26) and Detroit (July 31 and August 1). Additionally, keep your eyes out for Mini Maker Faires taking place throughout the US, including as part of other independent science festival celebrations.

This year’s Maker Faire anticipates 90,000 attendees over the two days of the festival. Follow along with this year’s big event at www.makerfaire.com.
