The North Carolina Science Festival features 174 unique events across the state this September, tallying over 400 events total, including the coffee tasting pictured here. Described as a “500 mile wide, two-week long party,” by organizer Denise Young, the North Carolina Science Festival is proud to have launched its inaugural celebration this September. Organized by the University of North Carolina’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, the festival showcases science through tours, exhibits, and performances on all topics and for all ages. Sparked by science festivals in Cambridge, San Diego, and Europe, the festival hopes to both inspire children and adults, and energize the state’s leaders in science education and industry. In order to reach audiences over such a large area the festival has built a diverse team of organizations that reflect the wide breadth of science and technology activity throughout the state. The result is a program schedule that makes a visitor wish they could be everywhere at once: from estuary tours and equinox parties on the Eastern shore, to star gazing and weather balloon launches in the Western mountains, to fascinating discussions in the Research Triangle. The festival starts on September 11 with the annual Bugfest celebration, and a large street-fair style expo day caps it all off on Saturday, September 25 at UNC’s main campus in Chapel Hill.
